What a Gripper is

Gripper are devices which provides temporary contact with objects to be grasped. Generally speaking, it’s an active link between the handling equipment and the workpiece. It is often used the generic term “end effector”. Grippers are the end of the kinematic ad dynamic chain of an industrial robot and realize interaction with the work environment.
Grippers are not only used in industrial robots: they are a universal component in automation and their functions depend on specific applications.
The easiest way to describe gripper clamping force is to think about a human hand: just like the hand, the gripper enables gripping, tightening, handling and releasing of a workpiece.

What a Gripper is used for

Grippers are an essential component of automation systems, allowing them to interact with their environment by picking up and moving objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights.

Kind of Grippers

In order to satisfy all the request from the automation market it has been designed great variety of grippers. The main feature to distinguish grippers is the clamping force and the mechanical principle that exerts the force itself.
Clamping grippers are organised in several categories:
- parallel gripper
- toggle gripper
- angular gripper
- needle gripper
- membrane expansion

How to choose your Gripper

1. Object Characteristics: Analyze the size, shape, weight, and material of the objects to be handled. Different grippers are designed to accommodate various object types, so choose one that can effectively grasp the objects in your application.

2. Gripping Method: Determine the most suitable gripping method for your application. For example, if the objects have flat surfaces, parallel jaw grippers may be appropriate. If the objects are irregularly shaped, three-fingered grippers or soft grippers with adaptive fingers may be more suitable. If you are looking to palletize bags or boxes, our palletizing line would be appropriate.

3. Environment: Consider the operating environment, including factors such as temperature, humidity, and presence of dust or debris. Choose grippers that are compatible with the environmental conditions to ensure reliable performance and longevity.

4. Speed and Precision: Evaluate the required speed and precision of object manipulation. Some grippers are optimized for high-speed operation, while others offer greater precision for delicate handling tasks.

5. Payload Capacity: Determine the maximum payload capacity of the gripper, which should exceed the weight of the heaviest object to be handled. Ensure that the gripper can safely lift and manipulate objects within the specified weight range.

6. Integration: Consider the ease of integration with the robot you are using. Choose grippers that are compatible with the bolt pattern on the wrist of the robot to streamline installation and operation. If direct mounting is not an option, our expert engineers can design an adaptor plate to fit any application need.

7. Customization Options: Assess whether the gripper offers customization options to tailor its functionality to specific application requirements. Some grippers may allow for adjustable finger positions, interchangeable fingers, or additional sensors for object detection and feedback.
